Course Details -
Course | Length (m) | No. of Controls | Control format | Estimated successful completion time (min) | Map Flip | Description |

Orange | 1100 | 18 | Standard | 20 | No | For participants familiar with map reading and compass work, controls mainly close to major features with some more challenging control sites included |
Red Short | 1600 | 27 | Mirco | 25 | Yes | Full on micro – control description with control number only. Technically challenging – plenty of opportunity to mis-punch – Separate control description with control number only |
Long | 2100 | 36 | Micro | 30 | Yes | As per Red Short – be mindful of parallel errors – no points for mis-punches – Enjoy! |
Mirco Orienteering is a new and challenging orienteering format. In this event, it only applies to red courses. It is suitable for large scale detailed maps where close attention to detail is essential to avoid the dreaded mis-punch.
Unlike the standard control format (flag and control descriptions), the micro control format in this case does not use flags and control descriptions will only include numbers, you will receive a map with the marked course and control descriptions will be available separately.
Each micro control location will be marked with an AiR control box pinned to the ground in the centre of the control circle. You must visit each control in order as per the normal orienteering convention. This means you will need to orienteer to the centre of the control circle on the map and look at ground level for the control box.
For all courses the map scale is 1:1500 i.e. 1 cm on the map represents 15m on the ground. This is much larger scale than you will have been accustomed to from the summer sprint series where the scale is normally 1:3000. Control circles will be 7.5mm which is equivalent to 11m on the ground.
All maps will be printed on A4 size paper with the red courses requiring a map flip.
The Red Short and Red Long courses do not share any control locations with the White, Yellow or Orange courses (except the Start and Finish flags) so if you are navigating towards a visible control flag on a red course think again (unless you are finishing)😉.
There are numerous micro control sites across the 2 red courses, some of which are shared. Several of them are near each other so the potential for mis-punching is significant. It is essential to maintain close contact with the map to avoid this scenario.
In the following illustration I have endeavoured to illustrate a typical micro-orienteering control location:
I hope you enjoy the challenge of these courses as much as I’ve enjoyed setting them and may the orienteering force be with you 😊.
